day 1 — Santo Domingo City Tour

12 hours

Overview

Most people who visit Punta Cana never leave the resort strip. And that’s fine — the beaches are spectacular. But if you want to understand the country you’re actually standing in, there is one day trip that changes everything: Santo Domingo.

Founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European city in the Americas. It was here that the New World began — the first cathedral, the first university, the first paved street, the first everything. Walking through the Zona Colonial feels like stepping directly into the 16th century, except the merengue is still playing and the rum is very cold.

This full-day tour from Punta Cana takes you there and back in comfort, with an expert bilingual guide who brings the history to life and a traditional Dominican lunch included.

What happens

1

What You’ll See and Do

2

After hotel pickup from Punta Cana or Bavaro, you travel west through the Dominican countryside by air-conditioned bus — approximately a three-hour drive that passes sugar cane fields, local villages and the changing landscape of the island.

3

Your first stop in Santo Domingo is Los Tres Ojos — a breathtaking series of three limestone caves and underground lakes with turquoise water. It’s one of the most dramatic natural sites in the Dominican Republic and a perfect introduction to what the country looks like beyond the beach.

4

From there, your guide takes you on a panoramic drive past the Columbus Lighthouse (El Faro a Colón) and the Presidential Palace before arriving in the Zona Colonial — the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the heart of the city.

5

Inside the Colonial Zone, you’ll visit:

6

Alcázar de Colón — the palace of Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus

7

The National Pantheon — where Dominican heroes rest

8

Catedral Primada de América — the first cathedral built in the New World, dating to 1512

9

After the guided tour, you have free time on El Conde pedestrian street and Calle Las Damas — the oldest street in the Americas — to explore, shop for local crafts, cigars, rum or Larimar jewelry, or simply sit at a café and watch the city go by.

10

Lunch is served at a traditional Dominican restaurant where you’ll enjoy la bandera dominicana — rice, beans, meat and salad — the national dish of the Dominican Republic.

11

The return drive gets you back to your hotel by early evening.

Day 2 — Catalina Island & Altos de Chavon

10 hours

Overview

Most day trips from Punta Cana take you to one place. This one takes you to two completely different worlds in a single day — and they couldn’t be more different from each other.

In the morning, you’re underwater at one of the most spectacular coral reefs in the Dominican Republic, surrounded by tropical fish and vibrant marine life off the shores of Catalina Island. By afternoon, you’re walking cobblestone streets through a stunning recreation of a 16th-century Mediterranean village, looking out over the Chavón River from one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Caribbean.

Two experiences. One extraordinary day.

What happens

1

After hotel pickup from Punta Cana or Bavaro, you travel southwest to La Romana — passing sugar cane fields and countryside that your guide brings to life with stories about Dominican history, culture and rum-making traditions. At the Río Salado pier, you board a catamaran and set sail for Catalina Island.

2

Your first stop is La Pared — The Wall. This is one of the most impressive snorkeling sites in the Dominican Republic — a coral wall that drops from the surface of the Caribbean Sea, teeming with live corals, tropical fish, crustaceans and marine species. It’s a protected national park site and the variety of underwater life here is extraordinary. All gear is provided and guides are in the water with you throughout.

3

After snorkeling, the catamaran continues to Catalina Island itself — a two-kilometer stretch of white sand beach with crystal clear turquoise water and complete tranquility. This is your time. Swim, relax on the beach, order drinks at the beach bar and enjoy a full Dominican buffet lunch — grilled meats, rice, salads, tropical fruits and open bar included.

4

In the afternoon, you leave the island and drive to Altos de Chavón — a meticulously recreated 16th-century Mediterranean village built on the cliffs above the Chavón River at Casa de Campo. Cobblestone streets, stone archways, an amphitheater that has hosted concerts by Frank Sinatra, Julio Iglesias and Santana, and views over the river that are genuinely breathtaking. Your guide walks you through the village, its art schools, galleries and history before you have free time to explore on your own.
