Puerto Plata

New adventures in this destination are coming soon.

Puerto Plata is on the Atlantic north coast, under the Isabel de Torres mountain and its cable car. The 27 waterfalls of Damajagua, the amber museum and the Victorian centre of the city are the usual stops.

It is the furthest destination we reach from Punta Cana, around five hours by road, so it is normally visited as part of a multi-day itinerary rather than a single day out. The Atlantic here is rougher than the Caribbean side, which is why it is the country's windsurfing coast.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Puerto Plata from Punta Cana?
About five hours by road. We recommend it as part of a multi-day tour rather than a day trip.
What are the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua?
A chain of natural pools and cascades you climb and then jump or slide back down, with a guide, helmet and life jacket. How many of the 27 you do depends on the water level and the group.
