Bayahibe / La Romana

Bayahibe / La Romana

Bayahibe is a fishing village turned departure point: almost every boat to Saona and Catalina leaves from here. La Romana, twenty minutes west, adds Altos de Chavón, a replica sixteenth-century Mediterranean village above the Chavón river.

The water here is inside the Cotubanamá National Park, which is why the reefs are in better shape than most of the coast. From Punta Cana it is a two-hour drive, so departures are early and the day runs long.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Saona Island tours leave from Bayahibe?
Yes. Saona lies within the national park and boats depart from Bayahibe, with road transfer from Punta Cana included in the tour.
What is there to do in La Romana besides the beaches?
Altos de Chavón, with its amphitheatre and craft workshops overlooking the river, is the main stop, and it is often combined with Catalina Island in the same day.
